Respirator Fit Testing South-East Queensland

Respirator Fit Testing South-East Queensland
admin

A new code of practice on silica exposure in construction came into effect on 1st May 2023, all workers working in the construction industry where they can be exposed to respirable crystalline silica need to be fit-tested for tight-fitting respirators annually.  We also provide respirator fit testing for all other industries like healthcare, mining and quarrying.

What is Respirator Fit Testing?

Respirator fit testing is a test to ensure the respirator can perform seal around the wearer’s face and can provide the required level of protection. Quantitative respirator fit testing uses Portacount or similar equipment to perform the respirator fit testing. The equipment checks the ambient concentration of the particles and compares it with the concentration inside the mask and presents the results as a fit factor. When the required fit factor is achieved, the participant passes the respirator fit test.

What is included in the respirator fit testing?

The fit tester will assist in selecting a suitable respirator, providing the required training in wearing and maintaining the respirator. The fit test will be carried out once the participant is comfortable wearing the respirator. Fit tests include carrying out some exercises while wearing the respirator. The exercises included in the OSHA protocol for Portacount include bending down, talking, looking side by side and looking up and down.
