What does a respirator fit test consist of?
Respirator fit testing includes training participants on the proper use and maintenance of respirators, as well as conducting fit checks to ensure the respirator fits correctly, and finally, quantitative respirator fit testing to verify that the respirator provides adequate protection. It is common for the tester to try several different masks to find the most suitable one for the participant. IOHC offers respirator fit testing both on-site and at our office in Underwood.
What is a fit check for a respirator mask?
Fit check is a check workers should carry out every time a respirator is worn. It ensures that they wear the respirator correctly every time.
What is the difference between a fit check and a fit test?
Fit check is a quick assessment that should be performed every time the respirator is worn. Respirator fit testing should be completed annually or whenever the respirator in use is changed. Fit testing confirms that the respirator fits the wearer’s face properly and offers an adequate level of protection.
What happens during respirator fit testing?
During respirator fit testing, participants receive training on how to wear, maintain, and dispose of a respirator properly. They are asked to don the respirator, which is connected to the quantitative fit testing equipment. Participants then perform various exercises to ensure the respirator maintains a proper seal around their face during different activities.
Does facial hair affect respirator fit?
Yes, facial hairs affect the seal of the respirator. It is a requirement that workers must be clean-shaven during the fit test and every time the respirator is worn on the worksite. It is also a requirement under AS/NZS 1715 that the respirator interface area must be free of facial hair. If workers can not shave their facial hair for any reason, they can use PAPR with a loose hood.
Do you need a fit test for a full-face respirator?
Yes, all tight-fitting respirators require fit testing. That includes half-face disposable respirators, half-face negative and positive air pressure tight-fitting reusable respirators, full-face tight-fitting negative air pressure respirators and tight-fitting positive air pressure respirators.
