How to choose the correct respirator.
The most common question we encounter is Which respirator do I use?
There is no single answer to this question. The answer depends on what you need protection against. The respirator must be selected based on several factors, including the operator’s comfort, contaminants, required protection factor, task factors, and compliance with PPE. Conformance with the requirements of AS/NZS 1716 is also required.
As a general guide, workers in dusty industries like construction typically require P2 or P3 respirators. However, if you are working with chemicals such as epoxy flooring or spray painting, you will need a respirator with gas and vapour cartridges. Additionally, those exposed to both dust and chemicals will require combination cartridges for protection against both particulates and chemical gases and vapours. Whether you require a half-face or full-face, or supplied air respirator will depend on the required level of protection.
Most workers in the health care industry will only require fit testing with an approved N95/P2 respirator. However, if you are working with chemicals, i.e., in the sterilising department or in areas where chemical exposure is present, then you will need a respirator with a combination cartridge.
